An Introduction to Television Idents
Identifying the Channels
The function of a television Idents is to identify the channel as the first idents in the world appeared on BBC as a commercial television which began to expand and show the viewers can be able to identify the different channels. Ever since the first idents was introduced, it has started to change with a great ideal and with the help of new technologies that have played a large role in their development. The first idents on BBC One was identified as the "Bat's Wings". Later in 1960, the first "BBC TV" logo paperer within a circle was introduced towards the viewers.
The most famous ident was "The Globe" was introduced ing 1963. It rotated as the BBC TV Logo along with a voice saying "This is BBC Television. One year later, BBC 2 arrived on TV.
Earlier in the 1990s, the emergence of the satellite television meant that TV indents were even more important to us while was watch our favourite TV shows on our favourite programmes.
An idents play an very important role when it comes to keeping a channel's schedule organised with the remaining time between one TV show to another TV show. The idents is also an ideal opportunity to provide the audience with a key information about programming that channel. With this information on TV, it will entice the viewers to continue watching that particular channel rather than them switching over to a different during the idents.
Non-commercials channels like BBC channels do both have the time between programmes that other commercial channels have, which is why they have an idents in between that short time break after each BBC programmes.
There are reason why idents are used in some channels which are:
To provide information
Promote a variety of information to the viewers
Regulate the scheduling and fill time
Also provide a break for the studio workers (news and sports)
When the channel BBC 4 arrived, it began to produce factual and informative programmes to it viewers. This initials a reputation to the viewers that this channel will only bring programmes about both History, Geography and Science to entertain and teach it viewers about the world's life.
CBBC and Cbeebies arrived and it began to produce a variety of children show to it viewers but each have a different style of production towards it viewers. CBBC produce a show that is suitable for children at the age 7-15 with a age suitable programmes that the children will like and Cbeebies produce a show that is suitable for children from 0-6 witch a age suitable programmes that will entertain the children.
When news about BBCiPlayer arrived, many of the people can go on to that particular channel to rematch their film that they have missed in the last seven days or more. It made people life a lot more easier and happier when they are watching their show online or on TV (it the TV have that kind of technology in it system).
An idents also helps to endorse the brand of a particular channel by allowing it viewers to become familiar with the logo and the style of the channel. As it is also a visual reminder of a particular channel and imprints the "brand" into the mind of it viewers which makes them more likely to return and watch the channel that the idents was showing them.
